When a baby is newly born, it is desirable to feed him or her from the breast of his or mother. The mother's milk is the best feed for him. But as the baby grows this diet might prove insufficient for him. To fulfill his increasing needs the child is often switched to solid food.
When to Switch:

You can feed your baby with food at the age of six months. This is the time when the mouth of your child has changes in it. Due to these changes now he is able to swallow the food. There is another measure for you that you can remember in order to switch to the solid food. This measure is the time when your baby has reached the double weight than that he was born with. First Solid Food:
In order to give baby food to your child what you will try first? Normally first time you can try rice as baby food. It contains less proteins and it may not cause any kind of allergic reaction. As you are giving the solid food to your baby for the first time so you may mix it with the breast milk. You can also mix the rice with formula and make sure that you mix it thin. Making the food thin will be easy for the child to swallow. You can try some other cereals as well when your child gets used to the rice cereal. After trying these other cereals as baby solid food now you can try mixing it with some vegetables as well. It is a better option for you to try these vegetables first. The reason is that if you give your baby sweet fruit prior to vegetables then he may not want to eat vegetables afterward.
Add to solid food gradually:
Make sure that you avoid cow's milk until your baby gets one year old. After feeding your baby with cow milk for more than a month you may now add some other solid dairy products to the diet of your child. It is often good to bring your child to solid food gradually. You should not be in any sort of hurry in introducing new food to your child. Wait at least about twenty four hours before you introduce some new food to your child. Also make sure that the new solid food is not having any reaction.
